The weather in Anchorage and the Eagle River area has been HOT! I am sure we must be breaking some records because it doesn’t typically even get to 60 degrees during the month of May. We have been in the low to mid-70s for several days now and it doesn’t appear to be letting up too much.
The warmer weather hasn’t impacted my running, though. I am excited to still be running and although I have been saying that running the Chicago Marathon this year is a long shot, I am just one week away from the start of Marathon training! I truly am surprised that I have been able to run this much. And excited! I am planning on changing up my training schedule a little, so more on that next week.
For now, I have been mixing the runs up a little and taking a break from the hills to run the Anchorage scenic trails. One of my favorite running views is Mount Susitna, also known locally as the Sleeping Lady, which can be seen from across the inlet. There are many legends and myths about the Sleeping Lady but here is one that I particularly like.
And a fantastic view of the city…
Then back in my area, there have been lots of wildlife out and about. There wasn’t a lot of moose activity all winter, but now I see them daily and they are hanging out way too close to the road. That makes me nervous because people drive way too fast down this road and I worry that these guys will get hit. There have been several bear sightings as well, but they take off before I can get a photo. If you missed it, this guy was recently on my deck!
Running and Strengthening Update
- Monday Physical Therapy Exercises
- Tuesday Run 3 miles
- Wednesday Run 3 miles
- Thursday Run 3 miles
- Friday Physical Therapy Exercises
- Saturday Run 4 miles
- Sunday Rest/hanging out with the kiddos
This was a “down” week for running so next week (or technically this week) I will increase the long run to 6 miles. We are leaving for Idaho so I am having to move all of my runs up by one day so that I don’t miss out on my long run due to traveling. Looking forward to that run!
Family Fun
So no, I wasn’t too bothered by the heat but the high pollen count has made my life miserable. Yet, I want to be outside soaking up the sun. So, Scott and I took the grandkids to Eagle River to get them outside as well. I felt so bad for Charlie. She wanted Demi to go after her stick that she threw in the water, but she didn’t throw it very far so Demi wasn’t interested. Now Maddy and Tylor, on the other hand, had Demi swimming after sticks for quite a while and she was loving it.
We also had a little cookout over the weekend with Matt and Sonja. Love spending time with these guys but I wasn’t the most fun to be around. As I said, I was miserable with all the pollen in the air, and the medications that I take for this time of the year turn me into zombie mode. With that and all of the mosquitos and an influx of flies suddenly – where did they come from- I was soon wondering why I was so happy that the warmer weather had arrived. Itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing constantly, and one mosquito bite after the other is not my idea of fun. Hopefully, all of these allergens will calm down soon.
And Scott finally got all of his herbs and flowers transitioned and planted! These are only a few of the many planters that he puts together. He does a great job but it is a lot of work.
Just a little update on our week. Soon, I will post more about training for the marathon. Right now, I am still building a running base so the running updates can get a bit boring, but the fun is about to begin!
Until next time…
