It’s amazing how quickly a perfectly well planned out running schedule can turn into days of no running! And what is even more amazing is how those days can turn into weeks and then, before you know it, a MONTH has gone by.
But….this is how it all happened. Excuses???? Maybe….but legit to some extent. I mean it gets really hard staying motivated in all this darkness, ice, and snow.
- First of all, the area that I run is very hilly which led to tenderness in my left calf muscle. So, I took a few days off to let it recover. I have a long history of achilles tendonitis!
- Then, I was going to get back to running after my calf was better, but I was working a lot so I thought I would wait to start up again when I had a few days off.
- But, I decided to take those few days (10) off to fly to NC to visit my Mother for her 85th birthday. My plan would be to get back to running in the warmer weather while there. Great idea!
- Yet, when I got to NC, I just wanted to spend all of my time doing things with my Mother. Can’t blame me for that being that I only get to see her every few months if that.
- And then all of that time in-between….well sometimes I just get tired! 12 hour shifts in the NICU can be very draining.
- Plus, should I ignore the weather reports that advise against running?
The things I tell myself sometimes….
This is certainly not where I wanted to be at 8 weeks prior to marathon training, but this is where I am. My calculations based on a gradual build up would put me at about 25 miles per week to start marathon training which is doable.
I am just excited that I am finally back to running! And the fact that it has warmed up a bit has helped. We have had sub-zero to single digit temperatures! And snow!
I am hopeful that there will not be any more setbacks for a while….keeping my fingers crossed and trying to be smart about my training.
I really can’t see how I can possibly overdo it with this build up schedule:
- Monday – 2.10 miles
- Tuesday – work day
- Wednesday – 3.10 miles
- Thursday – 2.5 miles
- Friday – work day
- Saturday – 3.1 miles
- Sunday – 2 miles
A total of 12.8 miles for the week. This will be a slow, painful, and gradual base building in hopes that I will start marathon training injury free! I am also working on strength training as well. More on that next time.
All miles were done at a very easy pace on a hilly course in the snow and ice. Looking forward to spring!

As I mentioned, I did fly to NC to visit my Mother and to celebrate her 85th birthday.
And even more fun, Terry and Robert along with Teena and Jose joined us! We had a great time! My Mother received this amazing edible arrangement from her hairdresser, Sara, and her Mother.
It appeared too pretty to eat, but we got over that ha ha! It was so good! Teena, Jose, and I took Mom out for a birthday lunch and then met up with Terry and Robert at her house to open gifts and have cake and ice cream a little later that evening. It was great seeing everybody and on such a special occasion. ♥
I was sad to have to say good-bye to my family, but they had to get back to work on Monday. But, I still had a few days left to spend with Mom, so we planned a trip to Yanceyville, NC…..well, I don’t know, just because 🙂 It was a nice drive and a quaint and charming little town, but the weather was not the best. Mom said she would like to come back when the weather was better so that we could spend a little more time checking it all out.
And this is the Yancey House which is for sale….hmmmm
This 19th century building served as the county jailhouse until 1973.
And this restored little schoolhouse -Poteat School- was in use from 1913-1922
I got a quick little tour of the courthouse from the town commissioner. The inside was absolutely gorgeous. My pictures, though, didn’t do it justice so I decided not to post them.
Yanceyville was our only real big venture out being that I only had a few days in NC, but it was a fun little get away. We spent the rest of our time in the local area, shopping, eating, and more than one trip to the Mooresville Ice Cream store.
Looking forward to my next visit! Miss you so much, Mom!
With all the fun we were having, how was I going to have time to run?
Now, though, I have to MAKE the time……no more lollygagging around……we will see how it goes.
