While writing my last post, I was worried about a young bear that Demi ran up a tree. The poor little bear was up there for almost two hours!! I was relieved when it finally came down!!
Week 4 of NYC Marathon training went well. I had to switch days on the schedule a little for two reasons. One, I was down on the Kenai and the reds were running. And two, I had to work on Saturday so I switched my long run to Sunday.
- Monday – Off
- Tuesday – Regular Run (AYF) 4 miles (not timed)
- Wednesday – I took this day off because of dip netting on the Kenai.
- Thursday – 5 miles target 45-46 minutes; ran 5 miles 44:05 (8:49)
- Friday – Scheduled off but ran to make up for Wednesday. Regular Run 4 miles 37:14 (9:19) hilly course
- Saturday – Flex day, took it off because of work and a scheduled long run on Sunday morning.
- Sunday – 11 miles target 1:44-1:48 (9:26-9:48) Ran 11 miles 1:45:33 (9:36) I felt really tired from this week’s activities. I started out really slow and finished a little faster. It was really hot out!
The fireweed is in full bloom. I took this photo while running in Kenai, Ak.
With all the traveling, camping, and fishing activities this week, I was reminded that diet, getting enough rest, and staying hydrated does matter if I want to run well. I was very sluggish on my long run. I have to remember that those things are all part of training! Right now, I am just building a mileage base. According to my NYRR Virtual Trainer, I will start speed work soon.
There seems to still be so much controversy in the running community regarding static stretching. What has been working for me is about a half mile walk to warm up prior to the run then easy static stretching. After the run, I also do some light stretching. Then, every night, or most nights anyway, I do a full routine of stretching followed by icing for 20 minutes. I get really tight calves, so I believe that the stretching that I do is necessary. Sometimes, I follow the stretching with foam rolling before icing.
As I mentioned, we did go fishing and camping this week-end. We already have some fish from the Copper River area, but we decided to go to the Kenai for more. I call it fishing but it is dip netting which we do from the shore, although, we are standing in water up to our chest at times. We wear chest waders to keep dry. But poor Scott’s waders had a leak and they were filling up with water! He continued to dip net anyway. Not me! I would have been done. That water is cold!
It was definitely a nice evening on the Kenai. And not too many people. Some days dip netters are shoulder to shoulder! That isn’t much fun because nets are constantly getting tangled. We did some dip netting the first night we got there and also during the low tide the next afternoon. We caught a total of 20 salmon which was pretty good being how slow it was. We had thought about fishing the low tide the next morning, but decided against it. Instead, we slept in a little and then took our time getting home. It is nice to not feel rushed. We both had to work the following day.
And a beautiful sunset.
When we got home, we were happy to see that our flowers had not completely wilted in the heat. It has been quite warm here in Alaska this summer.
And our lilies have started blooming!
I will admit that Scott does all the work in caring for the flowers. I just try to keep the chickweed to a minimum, water, and of course, take photos. He does such a good job though. They look awesome. His herbs also are doing really well along with the lettuce.
So, yes its been a busy week! And week 4 of marathon training completed – only 16 more to go! I think I will take a break and have some of that fresh salmon for dinner tonight over rice with a mango salsa! Yum!
Have a great week and happy running!
